Q: What do I need to consider when selecting a drum pump?

Amos: There are several characteristics to know when selecting your drum pump. These include required head and flow, chemical name and type, temperature of the fluid being pumped, specific gravity and viscosity, container size and how you would like to power the pump; air drive, electric or manually.

Understanding these characteristics will ensure you select the appropriate pump series, tube construction, motor type and accessories. If you are not familiar with these terms, or need a hand calculating specific gravity or viscosity, there are a wide variety of resources available online - or you can give Global Pumps a call.

Q: How do I know which pump tube and motor to choose?

Amos: When you are selecting a pump tube, it is critical that the tube is chemically compatible with the fluid. Chemical compatibility refers to the resistance of exposed pump material to the fluids being pumped. We discussed this further in a recent blog. To determine the appropriate tube, many pump manufacturers like Global Pumps, offer a chemical compatibility chart.

Pump tubes are available in a variety of materials, including polypropylene, PVDF and stainless steel (316Ti).

Another consideration is the pump motor, you can choose from an electric motor, pneumatic motor, or hand-operated.

Q: Can I discuss custom pump tubes to suit my drum size?

Amos: Yes, Global Pumps offers customised pump tube lengths up to 3000mm long. We also offer an extensive range of accessories such as barrel adaptors to suit any drum or open-container type.

Q: Are mixing drum pumps an option?

Amos: Drum pumps are available with a mixing function - these pumps mix the media inside the drum before decanting and are ideal for pumping liquids that tend to separate. Mixing drum pumps are available in different materials, such as polypropylene and stainless steel, to ensure they are compatible with different chemicals and acids.

Q: Do you offer options for fluids with high viscosity?

Amos: Yes, Global Pumps do. We offer a high viscosity drum pump option. Although the standard drum pump can pump up to 1,000 CPS, we can offer a different type of drum pump which can handle higher viscosities.
