We're putting laboratory pumps under the microscope

Laboratory pumps demand precise dosing, metering or the safe transfer of liquids, as well as a gentle pumping action. Given the nature of the products being pumped, the pump's characteristics are critical to ensure the integrity of the delicate product.

In this blog, our Global Pumps’ team put laboratory pumps under the microscope and outline suitable options for a wide range of applications.

Recommendations when selecting a laboratory pump.

There are a wide variety of pumps suitable for laboratories , which makes the decision-process that bit harder. When it comes to selecting one, Global Pumps recommend answering the following questions:

  • What do you need from your pump? Every type of laboratory pump has its own set of advantages and drawbacks. Best you know what you want to ensure your selection is appropriate.
  • Do you have a strong set of requirements for the pump? This will eliminate consideration on pumps that are not fit for purpose and will hone in on a specific pump type.
  • Is the pump suitable for laboratory applications? Does it offer gentle pumping action? Will it maintain the integrity of your product? In most instances, pump suppliers offer a list of suitable applications for the pumps.

Types of laboratory pumps available

Peristaltic Hose Pumps

Peristaltic hose or tube pumps are a popular choice due to their simple operation - with the hose or tube the only component that comes into contact with the product. These pumps offer the cleanest flow of any pump, with the lowest potential for contamination and easy accessibility to change over or sterilise the tube.

Most importantly, these pumps can handle high-viscosity fluids and liquids with a high amount of particulate matter (up to 80%).

However, flow from standard peristaltic hose pumps have pulsation. Depending on the type of peristaltic hose pump, you may require pulse dampeners to reduce the pulsation and ensure it’s not influencing the integrity of your product.

There are specific peristaltic tube pumps available that are suitable to applications such as laboratories. For example, the Verderflex Vantage 5000 is designed for accurate dosing of harsh chemicals, particularly those with entrained gas or liquids containing suspended particles.

Air Operated Diaphragm Pumps

AOD pumps operate without any electricity, which removes any potential ignition. This removes the risk when handling and transferring flammable liquids. These pumps are intrinsically safe, which means they will not generate sparks.

When it comes to operation, AOD pumps are self-priming and can be deadheaded. This allows operators to rest easy knowing their pump won’t be damaged during the pumping process. Variable flow and discharge pressures mean you can alter the flow rate depending on your specific application.

The Verderair AOD pump range offers a wide range of materials of construction, providing compatibility with some of the harshest, dangerous chemicals. Most importantly, these pumps offer leak-free operation, which ensures the safety of your laboratory facilities.

Metering / Dosing Pumps

Metering and dosing pumps provide a precise volume of media at a continuous rate. They offer adjustable flow rates that can be changed by adjusting stroke length or by the pulses. The popular range of ProMinent Pumps are a common choice for chemical applications, including chemical and pH dosing, chlorine dosing and measurement, petrochemicals, and mineral processing.

Drum Pumps

Drum pumps are a popular choice for transfer from drums or IBCs - and are suitable for thin to low viscous, neutral, or corrosive liquids. When chemicals arrive in IBCs or large 200L drums, drum pumps offer a portable pump option, specifically designed for intermittent operation.

There are a wide variety of motor types, as well as drum pump tubes, suitable for laboratory requirements.

Techniflo Drum Pumps offer operators flow rates up to 200L/min, are lightweight and safe, and most importantly simple to operate.
