(0:03) Will a centrifugal pump work running backwards?

(0:06) First thing you have to understand is that the veins on the impeller are shaped in order to fling the liquid being pumped up and out of the discharge.

(0:19) So if the impeller is running backwards, the veins aren't running the correct way and therefore what you get is a reduced flow rate coming out the discharge so it will actually work.

(0:35) You still get the centrifugal force of pushing the liquid to the outer edge of the impeller.

(0:41)But as the shape of the volume of the pump and the veins in the impeller are all the wrong way, you won't get the same flow rate coming out of your discharge or pressure when running your pump backwards.

(0:55) Another thing you need to note is that impellers like this one are screwed onto the shaft.

(01:03) So if you do run your pump backwards, it will unscrew off the shaft and slam into the front casing of your pump.

(01:11) So just make note that when you do start up your centrifugal pump, make sure it is running in the correct direction.

(01:19) Otherwise you could cause damage to your pump.
