CAN MAG DRIVE PUMPS HANDLE SOLIDS?

Techniflo TB Series Mag Drive Pumps for Dirty Chemicals and Acids

The way a mag drive pump works, is a drive magnet attached to the motor which then turns the impeller which a magnet attached. There is a rear casing on the pump which the magnetic force goes through to drive the impeller. The majority of conventional pumps needs a mechanical shaft seal, however with a mag drive pump, this is not the case. One of the great advantages of using this type of pump which doesn’t have seals or gland packing, is that it is 100% leak resistant.

Whilst there are a few mag drive pumps that can pump more viscous, or heavier fluid, the majority of the mag drive pumps available are aimed at handling liquids that have no solids in them.  The main factor behind this is that any solids within the liquid could result in a failure of the thrust surfaces and the sleeve bearings which is contained within the pump itself. This is the main factor as to why mag drive pumps are mostly used in applications where there is clean chemicals. Mag drive pumps are not normally utilised for heavy duty applications such as pumping slurries, sludges, or fluids which are solid-laden.

However, in saying that a lot of mag drive pumps can not pump solids, there is one mag drive pump which is designed to be able to handle solids up to 6mm - The Techniflo TB series pump. This pump uses an advance design with tighter tolerances, which allows it to handle solids. Global Pumps has many applications where conventional mag drive pumps only lasted a couple of months and then after installing the TB series, the pump has been in place for years without needing to be touched. And another where a TB series pumps sulphuric acid slurry.
