FIRE PUMPS WORKING PRINCIPLE

A fire pump system is designed to deliver water at the required pressure and flow rate when the available mains supply is insufficient for firefighting demand.

The system typically consists of a pump, driver, controller and associated pipework. Water is drawn from a dedicated source - such as a tank, reservoir or underground supply - and distributed through sprinkler systems and hydrant networks to support fire suppression throughout the site.

Fire pump systems operate automatically when a pressure drop is detected within the fire protection network, ensuring rapid response during an emergency.

Systems can be configured to meet the specific hydraulic requirements of commercial, industrial and mining facilities.

APPLICATIONS

Fire pump systems are widely used across mining, heavy industry and building services environments where reliable fire protection and compliant water pressure are essential.

Common applications include:

  • Commercial office buildings and high-rise developments
  • Schools, universities and education facilities
  • Hospitals, aged care facilities and healthcare centres
  • Shopping centres and public infrastructure
  • Warehouses and distribution centres
  • Manufacturing plants and processing facilities
  • Mining operations and heavy industrial sites
  • Oil & gas facilities
  • Remote camps and accommodation villages
  • Defence and government facilities
  • Sites with limited or inconsistent mains water supply

In these environments, a properly specified fire water pump system ensures adequate flow and pressure to sprinkler and hydrant networks, forming a critical part of the site’s overall fire protection strategy.

FAQs

What types of pumps are used in fire pumps?

The scale and configuration of a fire pump depends on the hydraulic requirements of the site. In most installations, ISO end suction centrifugal pumps are utilised due to their efficiency, reliability and compliance with fire protection standards.

Pump materials and configurations are selected based on the application and environmental conditions.

Please see our essential guide to fire pumps blog for more information about diesel vs electric fire pumps.

Are fire pump systems customisable?

Yes, our fire pumps can be customised to suit your application's demands and requirements. This includes pump selection, control systems, skid layouts and optional accessories to match plant room or enclosure constraints.

What standards do your fire pump systems comply with?

Our fire pumps are manufactured to Australian Standard 2941-2013 and align with the Intent of American Fire pump standard, NFPA20. All systems are performance tested prior to dispatch to verify duty points and compliance.

Can fire pump systems be supplied with enclosures?

Yes! Fire pump packages can be supplied within purpose-built enclosures or modified containers to suit environmental conditions, site access or noise considerations.

Are spare parts available for the fire pump?

For your peace of mind, the pump includes a lockable, galvanised toolbox containing essential engine spare parts. This ensures you have readily available replacements for critical components.

Does the fire pump include a fuel tank?

Absolutely! The pump comes equipped with a factory-mounted fuel tank sized for a 6-hour runtime, ensuring you have the fuel needed for extended operation.

How can I reduce noise from the fire pump?

We understand noise reduction is important. While sound attenuation isn't included as standard, we offer various silencer options to fit your needs. Additionally, if you choose a pump enclosure, we can incorporate acoustic panelling for further noise reduction.

Does Global Pumps provide installation services?

While Global Pumps does not carry out on-site installation, we provide you with detailed documentation and technical support to assist contractors with installation and commissioning.

Are motor starters included with the fire pump?

Yes, the control panel includes a soft-starter for the motor, ensuring a smooth and reliable startup process for your pump.

What is the typical lead time for a fire pump set?

Lead times vary depending on configuration and project requirements. As a general guide, most fire pump systems are supplied within 6–8 weeks following design approval and sign-off.

Product range Time frame
Diesel Fire Pump set 6-8 weeks
Electric Fire Pump set 6 weeks
Diesel/Electric Fire Pump Set 8 weeks

PRODUCT INFORMATION

The Global Pumps fire pump range includes complete fire protection pump systems configured to suit commercial buildings, industrial facilities, mining operations and remote sites. Systems can be supplied as stand-alone units or as fully integrated solutions, depending on site requirements.

Depending on your application and site requirements, fire pump system configurations can be tailored to ensure performance meets the site’s hydraulic demand. Fabrication of steel bases and pipework is carried out in-house - with the capabilities to build pump sets to suit your site’s plant room.

All fire pump systems are tested as part of quality control procedures. Testing is completed at Global Pumps’ South Australian test facility to achieve the specified duty points prior to dispatch, providing confidence that your fire pump set will perform as required.

For many installations, ISO end suction centrifugal pumps are the preferred choice. These pumps provide a simple, efficient, and reliable solution within larger fire protection pump systems, particularly in commercial and industrial fire pump applications.

Fire Pump System Configurations

Global Pumps supplies packaged fire pump systems in two primary configurations to suit site requirements:

Skid-mounted fire pump systems

Skid-mounted fire pump packages are assembled on a common heavy-duty base frame and installed within a plant room or purpose-built enclosure. This configuration is ideal for sites with available internal space and allows straightforward integration with existing buildings and infrastructure.

Containerised fire pump systems

Containerised systems are housed within a modified shipping container, providing protection from weather, dust and temperature extremes. These systems are commonly specified for remote, industrial and outdoor installations where a controlled environment is required for reliable operation.
