(0:03) Hello, I'm Amos from Global Pumps and today I'll be going over what happens when your pump runs dry.

(00:11) Well, some pumps can run dry and some pumps can't.

(0:15) Depending on what style of pump you have, will depend on how much damage will be caused to the pump.

(0:22) If you have a standard centrifugal pump which has a mechanical seal, running the pump dry generally means that you'll just damage the mechanical seal.

(0:33) Other centrifugal pumps such as mag drive pumps, they can overheat very quickly and being a plastic can often melt the internals of the pumps.

(0:45) You can get dry run protectors for pumps that will stop the pump in time before damage has occurred.

(0:54) Pumps such as positive displacement pumps, like a peristaltic hose pump or an air operated diaphragm pump don't get damaged when they run dry.

(1:06) Pumps like a helical rotor pump as you have rubber on metal inside the pump, the rubber will melt very quickly and cause a lot of damage.
