Tip speed refers to the distance that any selected point on the peripheral of the impeller travels in a set amount of time.
How can this calculator help me?
Once you’ve established the impeller’s tip speed, you can use it to:
- compare pumps with regard to expected wear – the faster the tip of the impeller travels through a liquid or slurry, the faster the impeller will wear. So, when choosing a pump for longevity, select one with a low tip speed
- ensure the pump’s rotational speed does not exceed the recommended strength limits of the type of material used in the impeller
